Phillips is a Legend! Her career is well documented but not nearly as celebrated as the careers of her contemporaries!
And her product is not as readily available either. A music industry crime. This particular gem Burnin' was produced
during her second stint at Atlantic Records in which being a favored artist of owner Ahmet Ertegun, During Esther's two
stints at Atlantic, she was recorded within a variety of settings. The latter run yielded studio sessions ranging from
pop styles to then current popular southern soul modes of the times. Including recording critically acclaimed recording
sessions for another great studio project with The Dixie Flyers (at the legendary Criteria Studios in Miami). The creme
de la creme of this period is this live album, Burnin.' As the title suggests, Burnin' is a searing, fiery and swinging
R&B and Blues affair documenting yet another triumphant return to the spotlight of one of R&B's more colorful
superstars. Live St Freddie Jetts Pied Pier Esther is captured performing within her natural element, an R&B Blues
jaunt (The Pied Piper was then owned by legendary comedian Redd Foxx) with a crack band (populated with some of the
biggest session players in the R&B and Jazz circles) performing up close and personal, for an appreciative Los
Angeles audience. Burnin' is one of THE crowning achievements in a glorious professional recording career. A career
thats punctuated intermittently by Esther's hard scrabble, rough and tumble, headline grabbing lifestyle of this true
R&B pioneer. From her early beginnings as the million selling Little Esther, teenaged R&B star of the 1950's, to
her illustrious latter day run on CTI subsidiary KUDU as Jazz cum Disco Diva with What A Difference A Day Makes, Burnin'
represents the artistry and power within the emotion of Ms Phillips' live rendition of And I Love Him, The alchemy she
stirs in the strong woman blues of Gettin' Along Alright, the anguished plea of Please Send Me Someone To Love and the
happy victory blues of Cry Me A River Blues and ALL other song titles in between, makes this rare CD (The Japanese
Reissue from 2012 is an excellent remaster and is the subject of this review) a complete and thoroughly enjoyable
listening experience! This title is also distinguished as being one of the top ten LIVE R&B albums of All-Time!
Right up there alongside Aretha's Live At Fillmore, BB King's Live At The Regal, Etta James' Etta Rocks The House and
James Brown's Live at The Apollo! This cracking blues set is a vocal treasure featuring a legendary artist in her

Scream.... this title is yet another legendary recording of mammoth proportions with a performance to match its legend!
